Do State Colleges Require Proof of Residency?

I'm considering transferring to a community college in California from a state college in my home state of Michigan, and then transferring to a 4 year school like UCSB or UCSC. The thing is, is that California requires a year of residency to be eligible for in-state tuition, and there is no way I want to wait that year. So I was going to list my aunt+uncle's for my home address... would that count, or would they need proof that I've been living here for a year? I don't remember Michigan ever asking for any proof, but I can't be sure. Thanks. =]
