What was 1985 Los Angeles like?

I'm just wondering what these times were like. The 80's seemed like a fine time for music and generally just culture. What was residency in Los Angeles, California like? It looks pretty fantastic from what I see. Was there a lot of hope for the community? I think guitar, dancing, and performing arts were very popular and in the norm back then.
