Can a friend who doesn't live in the same city be the joint sponsor while I file for US Residency?

As long as you tell them what they are signing which is guaranteeing an Unlimited amount of money for an unlimited amount of Time in a contract with the federal government who they must advise if they move ...and they cannot withdraw from it
